Velvet armor. Lightning veins. Compact confidence.

Alocasia ‘Frydek’ is a cultivated form of Alocasia micholitziana, a Philippine species known for its deep green, velvety foliage and vividly contrasting white primary and secondary venation. Each leaf is arrow-shaped and lightly textured with a matte finish—caused by a fine layer of adaxial trichomes that scatter light and give the leaf its signature plush appearance.

While many Alocasias grow fast and oversized, Frydek remains compact, structured, and deeply ornamental. It grows from a rhizome and produces new leaves in tight succession, with each flush revealing slightly longer petioles and increasingly elegant shape. Its upright growth habit makes it ideal for small displays, shelves, or focal points that don’t need a pole to look complete.

This plant is often confused with the glossy hybrid Alocasia ‘Polly’, but Frydek is softer in texture, richer in tone, and far more subtle in its presence. It’s a collector’s species that plays well in a home or grow tent without demanding center stage—or giving up its impact.

Alocasia ‘Frydek’ Care Overview

Requirement Details
Light Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun—velvet leaves scorch easily.
Humidity 60–80%. High humidity helps prevent edge crisping and supports full leaf expansion.
Watering Allow top 1–2" of soil to dry before watering. Keep evenly moist during active growth.
Substrate Well-draining aroid mix: peat, perlite, bark, pumice, and a touch of organic matter.
Temperature 65–85°F. Avoid temperature drops below 60°F.
Feeding Fertilize every 3–4 weeks during active growth with a balanced formula.
Growth Habit Upright, rhizomatous. Grows in flushes from the base. Compact and architectural.
Pests to Watch Spider mites and thrips. Clean leaves regularly and monitor undersides.

Shipping Note:
All Alocasia ‘Frydek’ plants ship rooted in soil and are packed carefully to protect their velvety, textured foliage. While in transit, it’s normal for delicate leaves to experience minor cosmetic changes—such as edge curl, soft bruising, or slight yellowing. These are purely superficial and have no impact on the plant’s health or root system. Your plant will arrive stable, rooted, and ready to keep growing.
