Philodendron Red Moon is a highly sought-after variegated cultivar of Philodendron erubescens, known for its unstable, chimeric variegation and striking color shifts—from neon yellow to deep red to green—all often on the same leaf. Its appeal lies in its unpredictability: some leaves emerge fully red or chartreuse, others with wild blocky splits of all three hues. The visual drama is matched only by its growth speed—this is a fast, vining climber with an appetite for space, structure, and light.
The variegation is chlorophyll-deficient, making the yellow and red sectors more prone to sun stress or fading over time. The red pigment—anthocyanin—typically appears in young leaves and fades as the leaf matures. This is not a stable pattern and not guaranteed leaf to leaf, which is exactly why it’s a collector favorite: no two plants, or even two flushes, are the same.
This is not to be confused with Philodendron Painted Lady, which holds its yellow variegation longer, or Strawberry Shake, which tends toward pink-to-cream. Red Moon is more electric—both in coloration and in how fast it can put out new, color-variable growth under ideal conditions.
Environmental Requirements & Care
-
Light: Bright indirect to moderate direct light (250–400 μmol/m²/s). Variegation fades in low light and burns in harsh direct sun. Best coloration occurs under high, diffused light with stable DLI.
-
Substrate: Use a well-aerated aroid mix: coco coir, orchid bark, perlite, charcoal. Avoid compact soils. Roots grow fast and deep—keep the mix loose to support oxygen exchange.
-
Watering: Let the top inch or so dry between waterings. Variegated foliage is more prone to spotting if overwatered in low light. Maintain even moisture during active growth but avoid saturation.
-
Humidity & Temperature: Performs best in 60–85% RH and consistent warmth above 68°F (20°C). Anthocyanin expression (red pigmentation) is typically more pronounced in higher light with cooler nights.
-
Feeding: Regular feeding with a balanced, calcium-inclusive formula will support large, stable leaves and stronger variegation. Overfeeding nitrogen can speed greening.
-
Support: Provide a moss pole or climbing surface. Internode length tightens dramatically with support and consistent directional light.
Exact Plant Option (Pictured):
Rooted in a 3.5" pot. This individual shows active growth, distinct red and yellow sectoring, and a stable stem with multiple active nodes. You’ll receive this exact plant.
Grower’s Choice Option:
Also rooted in a 3.5" pot. Selected from the same crop for strong structure, visible color expression, and climbing readiness. All selections have emerging or recently unfurled leaves showing non-green pigmentation.
