Velvet shadows cut with gold.
Alocasia reginula, better known as “Black Velvet,” is already a collector’s staple for its dark, matte foliage and compact form. The ‘Aurea Variegated’ form pushes it into elite territory—layering lemon-yellow, mint, and pale lime variegation over deep velvet-textured leaves. Each one is different, and every leaf reads like a contrast study in light and shadow.
The aurea tones are caused by a chimeric mutation that suppresses chlorophyll in parts of the meristem, allowing underlying pigments like carotenoids to surface. Unlike white variegates, aurea plants tend to hold color more reliably and don’t fade out with age or stress as easily—making this both rare and surprisingly grower-friendly.
This is a rhizomatous species, not a climber or crawler. It grows in flushes from the base and stays naturally compact. Perfect for grow tents, glass-front cabinets, or shelves where subtle drama works better than size.

Alocasia reginula ‘Aurea Variegated’ Care Overview
Requirement | Details |
---|---|
Light | Bright, indirect light. Too much sun can fade color or burn velvet tissue. |
Humidity | 60–80%. Higher humidity supports crisp leaf edges and deeper contrast. |
Watering | Water when the top 1–2" of soil is dry. Avoid overwatering. |
Substrate | Well-draining aroid mix: peat, perlite, bark, and pumice. |
Temperature | 65–85°F. Keep warm and stable—avoid drafts. |
Feeding | Monthly during active growth with a balanced, low-nitrogen fertilizer. |
Growth Habit | Rhizomatous. Grows from the base. Compact, upright, and easy to manage. |
Pests to Watch | Spider mites and thrips. Velvet texture can mask early symptoms—inspect regularly. |
Shipping Note:
All Alocasia reginula ‘Aurea Variegated’ plants ship rooted in soil and are packed with care. Due to their delicate, velvet-textured leaves and pale variegation, some minor cosmetic wear during transit is normal—including soft edge curling, yellowing, or tip blemishes. These are purely cosmetic and do not affect root health or growth. Your plant will arrive stable, clean, and ready to continue thriving.
