The result is wildly inconsistent in the best way—some leaves go heavy on the pink, others lean nearly white, and some emerge looking dipped in watercolor.
The tricolor expression is caused by chimeric mutation, where different cell layers carry distinct pigment activity—primarily affecting chloroplast density and anthocyanin expression. Unlike stable, patterned variegation, Tricolor expression varies dramatically by light, age, and genetics. It’s unpredictable, and that’s why collectors chase it.
