Am I light, moderate or heavy?
Light
- You had to go looking for it — one silvered streak on an older leaf.
- Tap a growing tip over white paper: nothing falls, or almost nothing.
- One or two whitefly lift off when you brush the plant.
- New growth is coming in clean, and only one or two plants are involved.
Moderate
- You notice it walking past, without stopping to inspect.
- The tap test drops something most times you try it.
- A handful of whitefly lift off and settle straight back down.
- New growth is marked but not distorted, on a few plants in the same area.
Heavy
- You saw it from across the room — silvering across whole leaves.
- The tap test drops several larvae from one growing tip.
- Brushing the plant puts up a visible cloud of whitefly.
- New growth is scarred or twisted, and it has reached plants that were never touching.
Overshooting costs you very little — swirskii holds on pollen when prey runs short, so a heavy dose on a light problem simply stays on as a standing guard. Under-dosing costs you the round.
Thrips and whitefly are built to be underestimated:
- Damage is a record, not a reading. Silvering stays on the leaf long after the thrips that made it have gone.
- The stages doing the multiplying are the ones you cannot see. The whitefly lifting off when you brush the plant are the visible minority, not the size of it — the eggs and crawlers are underneath.
- It travels before it shows. Plants touching an obviously bad one are usually already carrying it.
Why more than one round?
Putting it out
- Rotate, don't shake. End over end for about thirty seconds, so the predators are evenly mixed back through the carrier.
- New growth first. Thrips larvae and whitefly eggs are on the youngest tissue, so that is where the dose belongs.
- Then the hot spots. Broadcast the rest across the upper third of the plant and anywhere damage is already visible.
- Undersides for the whitefly. The eggs and crawlers sit on the underside of the leaf, which is where the predators need to land.
Everything else is optional. Get these four and the release has done what it can.
A cleaner way
On a display plant, tip small piles into bio-boxes or paper cups hung in the branches instead of dusting the foliage. Same dose, nothing visible on the leaf.
The failure is forgetting. Very few programs fail because the mite underperformed. They fail in week five, when the plants look fine, the reorder does not happen, and the population holding the line ages out with nothing behind it.
A schedule is the same decision, made once. A bottle when it looks bad, then another when it looks bad again, is already a rhythm — just one you have to remember at the exact moment the plants look fine.

Is this your pest?
Swirskii treats three, and the stages it takes are the ones doing the multiplying. If none of these looks like your plant, the product you want is a different one.
Thrips rasp the leaf surface and leave silvery scarring with black frass specks, worst on the newest tissue. Whitefly leave sticky honeydew and sooty mould on the leaves below, and a cloud of small white adults when you disturb the plant — the eggs and crawlers sit on the undersides. Broad mites leave nothing visible at all; you read them from new growth that comes in small, hardened and twisted.
Swirskii takes thrips first-stage larvae, whitefly eggs and crawlers, and broad mites in the tight new growth where they breed. It does not take adult thrips or adult whitefly: that is Orius and your cards, and the soil stages are Sf nematodes.
Then: is swirskii the right answer to it?
Choose this if
Choose swirskii for a room that runs warm and humid, and for a mixed problem — thrips and whitefly together is the case it is built for. It is one of the few predatory mites that keeps hunting when a room gets genuinely hot, and it gets faster above 75°F rather than slower.
Choose something else if
Cold and dry are the limits. Below about 68°F cucumeris is the cheaper answer for thrips alone, and eggs need moisture to hatch, so a dry room costs you the next generation. Once spider mite webbing is up this is not the one — that is persimilis. And run only one loose generalist in a canopy: swirskii will take cucumeris juveniles.
What it kills, and what it won't
It also feeds on pollen, which is not a pest — it is how the population holds on a clean plant between outbreaks instead of starving out. Spider mite eggs get taken on encounter rather than hunted; once webbing is up, it is not the right one.

It hunts rather than waits
Swirskii is a predator — not a poison, not a repellent, nothing systemic. It is a high-metabolism generalist that goes looking, rather than sitting on a leaf waiting for prey to arrive. It finds a thrips larva or a whitefly egg and feeds on it directly. There is no residue on the plant afterwards, and there is nothing here for a pest to become resistant to.
It breeds where it lands
What you release is the start of the population, not the whole of it. In a warm, humid canopy they lay on the leaf and the next generation does a large part of the work — and it speeds up as the room gets hotter. Dry air is the brake: the eggs need moisture, so below about 60% humidity the adults still eat but fewer replace them.
Pest numbers, not mites
You will rarely watch this happen. They are about half a millimetre, pear-shaped, tan to pale orange, and quick. Judge it the way a grower does — new growth coming in clean, card counts flattening week to week — rather than by how many predators you can find.
It is not a knockdown. The silvering already on a leaf is scar tissue and it stays there whatever happens next. The first thing that actually changes is the growth that comes after.
Will it work in your room?
If your room sits below about 68°F and thrips are the only problem, cucumeris does the same job for less. And if spider mite webbing is already up, persimilis is what that needs.
About swirskii
A predatory mite about half a millimetre long that hunts on leaves. It has no interest in your plant and no interest in you — it eats other arthropods, and when there are none left it eats pollen until there are.

How you'll know it's working
Existing damage does not heal. A leaf that was silvered stays silvered after every thrips on it is dead, because that is scar tissue and not an infestation.
So judge by three things instead: new leaves coming in clean, fewer live larvae when you tap a growing tip over white paper, and card counts that flatten rather than climb.
Reinspect at 7–10 days. Adult thrips still landing on cards while new growth improves means the larvae are being handled and the adults are not — that is an Orius problem, not a swirskii failure.
Getting it to you
What is in the bottle, how it travels, and what happens if it arrives wrong.

What arrives
A mixed-stage population with food mites in a vermiculite carrier. The food mites are deliberate: they keep the predators fed on the way and for a while after you release them. Everything in the bottle goes onto the canopy.
You are unlikely to see movement, and that is normal at this size against a pale carrier. It is not a sign that anything is wrong.
Release on arrival. Swirskii has a very high metabolism and starts to starve in the bottle — 55–60°F in the dark for a few hours at most, and never the freezer.
When it ships, and when it lands
Shipping
We ship when they're ready to travel. Live orders go out Monday to Thursday. If a colony needs a beat to peak, or we're propagating a fresh batch, yours might hold up to a week. All mites and insects ship 2-day or Overnight depending on what's best for them.
When it lands
Open it that day. Rotate the bottle gently, then sprinkle onto the foliage, concentrating on the upper third and any hot spot where damage is already visible.
About the ones that don't make it
Some of them die on the way. That is why we send more than you paid for.
A predatory mite is the size of a grain of table salt. It ships in a bottle, in a van, for two days.
Roughly 15% will not survive that. We cannot prevent it, so we price it in: the number on the label gets counted out, and then the cushion goes in on top of it.
Your 500-mite bottle leaves here holding more than 500. The dead ones are already paid for.
If you can see them
Ladybugs, lacewing larvae, Orius — the minute pirate bug — and the beetles. Tip a few onto white paper and give them twenty minutes at room temperature before you judge anybody.
Cold insects are genuinely good at playing dead. The deceased have been known to get up and walk off the counter.

If you can't see them
Mites, nematodes, eggs — most of what we sell, this one included. A bottle of carrier looks the same whether it holds 500 live mites or none, and no photograph settles that. So we don't ask you to take one.
You file the report and our entomologist takes you through the diagnostic instead — the tap test on dark paper, where the box sat, what your room was doing, and then what the pest is doing about ten days later.

Orius insidiosus
Adults are out of scope for swirskii — it takes the larvae and the eggs, not the thrips doing the flying. Orius hunts the adults in the flowers where they feed and lay. Worth it when you can see them moving, not when you are working off damage alone.
Sf Nematodes
Swirskii is foliage only. Thrips drop off the leaf to pupate in the top inch of the medium, so that generation completes underneath a working canopy release unless something reaches it. Nematodes are what reach it.
Swirskii sachets
The bottle is the round you are doing now. Sachets are the layer that comes afterwards — a breeding population releasing onto the canopy for weeks, holding it between outbreaks rather than replacing this treatment.
Two cheap things that make the rest work harder. Blue cards give you the dated count this page keeps asking you to read. Breeder's Blend is pollen and Artemia; it keeps the population fed through the lull when prey gets scarce.
Questions
Why is Swirskii more expensive than other mites?
Swirskii is a premium predator with a much broader diet and a higher kill rate. It covers more pest types than almost any other mite on the market.
Will they eat my plants?
No. They are strictly predators. If no pests are present, they can survive on pollen, but they will never damage plant tissue.
Can I use them with Neem Oil?
Yes, once the spray is dry. Neem and horticultural oil kill on contact and leave nothing behind once dry; insecticidal soap needs a day before release.
Do they work on Root Aphids?
No. Swirskii only hunts on the foliage, and root aphids feed below the soil line. Of the soil biologicals, the mite Stratiolaelaps scimitus is the one with a published field trial against a root aphid — one significant season out of two, so worth trying rather than a cure. For fungus gnats and thrips pupae in the soil, nematodes and Stratiolaelaps are both well evidenced.
How long do they stay on the plant?
As long as there is food (pests or pollen), they will stay, breed, and establish a colony.
Is it safe for my pets?
Yes. These mites are 100% harmless to humans, dogs, cats, and other animals.
