Triple Blend Nematodes for Broad-Spectrum Soil Pest Control

At A Glance

Our Triple Blend is the ultimate "all-in-one" biological control solution. It combines three distinct species of beneficial nematodes (Steinernema feltiae, Steinernema carpocapsae, and Heterorhabditis bacteriophora) into a single package to provide maximum coverage against soil pests. While some nematodes float near the surface and others dig deep, this blend covers every layer of the soil profile. It is the perfect choice for gardeners who want to treat multiple pest issues at once or those who aren't 100% sure which specific pest is causing the damage.

  • Composition: A calibrated mix of S. feltiae, S. carpocapsae, and H. bacteriophora.

  • Best For: Broad-spectrum control of Fungus Gnats, Thrips, Fleas, Grubs, and Beetles.

  • Safe For: Plants, humans, pets, and earthworms.

  • Key Feature: The "Shotgun Approach"—treats surface, shallow, and deep soil pests simultaneously.

Target Pests

Because this contains three different hunters, it targets the widest range of pests.

  • Surface Pests (Sf): Fungus Gnat larvae, Thrips pupae, and Fruit Fly larvae.
  • Mobile/Surface Pests (Sc): Fleas, Caterpillars, Cutworms, Sod Webworms, and Crane Flies.
  • Deep Soil Pests (Hb): Japanese Beetle Grubs, Chafer Grubs, Weevils, and other root-feeding larvae.
  • How They Kill: Nematodes enter the pest through body openings and release symbiotic bacteria that kill the host within 24–48 hours.
Environmental Needs

Nematodes are microscopic aquatic worms that require specific conditions to survive and move.

  • Moisture: They swim through the thin film of water coating soil particles. The soil must be kept moist (not soggy) for at least 2 weeks after application.
  • UV Sensitivity: Direct sunlight kills them instantly. Always apply in the early morning, evening, or on a cloudy/rainy day.
  • Temperature: The Triple Blend is formulated to work across a wide range of soil temperatures, generally between 45°F - 86°F (7°C - 30°C).
Selection Guide

Not sure if you need the Triple Blend or a specific species? Here is how to choose.

  • Choose Triple Blend (The Shotgun): If you have multiple pests (e.g., Gnats AND Grubs), or if you aren't sure exactly what bug is eating your roots. This is the best "general preventative" for lawns and gardens.
  • Choose Single Species (The Sniper): If you have a specific, confirmed pest. For example, if you only have Fungus Gnats indoors, pure Steinernema feltiae (Sf) is often more cost-effective.
  • Nematodes vs. Mites (Stratiolaelaps): Mites are a "Shield" (slow, long-term prevention). Nematodes are a "Bomb" (fast, immediate knockdown). Use Nematodes to wipe out an active infestation, then release Mites 2 weeks later to keep it from coming back.
How to Use

Success depends on application density and timing.

  • Preventative Rate: Use the standard package size (e.g., 5 Million for ~250 sq. ft.) every 4–6 weeks during the growing season.
  • Curative Rate: For active infestations, double the density (e.g., 5 Million for ~125 sq. ft.). Apply every 2 weeks until pests disappear (usually 2–3 applications).
  • Prep: Water your soil thoroughly before application. Nematodes cannot travel effectively in dry dirt.
  • Mix: Dissolve the powder/gel into a bucket of water. Stir vigorously to break up clumps.
  • Apply: Use a watering can, pump sprayer, or hose-end sprayer to drench the soil. Remove all fine filters or screens (50-mesh or finer) from sprayers, or the nematodes will get trapped.
  • Agitate: Nematodes are heavy and sink quickly. Shake your sprayer or stir the bucket every few minutes to ensure an even spread.
  • Post-Care: Water the area again immediately after application to wash the nematodes off the foliage and down into the soil. Keep soil moist for 2 weeks.
How They're Shipped

Packaging: Shipped in a dormant state in a carrier powder or gel.

Viability: They look like a dusty paste or powder to the naked eye. They become active only when mixed with water.

Storage: Refrigerate immediately upon arrival. Do not freeze. They will last 2–4 weeks in the fridge (38-42°F).

When Your Order Arrives

Mix, drench, keep it moist.

How to apply your nematodes, and how to read the results over the next few weeks. Nematodes need water to move, soil to live in, and protection from sunlight — the routine is built around all three.

  1. 01

    Open the box right away

Bring the package indoors as soon as it arrives. Don't leave it on a hot porch, in a cold mailbox, or in direct sun. Nematodes ship in a moist carrier — sponge, gel, or clay depending on the species — and the carrier should still feel cool and damp on arrival.

  2. 02

    Apply now, or refrigerate

Best results come from applying the same day. If you need to wait, store the unopened package in the refrigerator (not the freezer) at 38–42°F. Most species stay viable for two to four weeks refrigerated; check the product description for the exact window. Pull from the fridge an hour before mixing to take the chill off.

  3. 03

    Mix with cool water

Dissolve the carrier in a bucket of cool, dechlorinated water — tap water is usually fine if it's been sitting out for an hour, or use rainwater if you have it. Stir gently to suspend the nematodes evenly. Use a watering can with the rose removed, or a backpack sprayer with any fine screens taken out (mesh finer than 50 will strain them out). See the product description for water volume per package.

  4. 04

Drench at dusk or on a cloudy day

Nematodes die in UV light within minutes, so timing matters more here than anywhere else. Pre-water the soil so it's already damp, then drench evenly across the target area — pots, beds, or lawn. Keep stirring the bucket as you go so the nematodes don't settle to the bottom.

  5. 05

Keep the soil moist for two weeks

Nematodes move through water films around soil particles to find their hosts. Dry soil stops them. Water lightly every two or three days for the first two weeks — enough to keep the top few inches damp, not soaked. Pest reduction shows up over one to four weeks depending on species and pest. If you don't see improvement by week four, that's when to email us.

FAQ

What is your Live Delivery Guarantee?

We guarantee that your beneficial insects will arrive healthy and ready to work. Because we are shipping live organisms, we use packaging and expedited shipping to ensure their safety. In the rare event that your order is compromised during transit, please take a photo of the package and contact us within 24 hours of delivery so we can make it right.

Can I see them?

No. Beneficial nematodes are microscopic. You will not see them in the package or in the soil. The carrier material (powder/gel) is visible, but the worms are not.

Will they survive the winter?

Generally, no. In most climates, nematode populations will drop significantly over winter or during hot, dry summers. We recommend seasonal applications (Spring and Fall) for outdoor lawn protection.

Can I use a hose-end sprayer?

Yes! This is the easiest way to treat lawns. Set the dial to a high ratio (like 1:15 or "free flow") and remove the internal filter screen. If you leave the screen in, you will filter out the nematodes and spray only water.

Will they kill my earthworms?

No. Beneficial nematodes are specific to insect pests. They generally ignore healthy earthworms, which are much larger and have different biology.

Can I use fertilizer at the same time?

Yes, standard fertilizers are fine. However, avoid high-nitrogen chemical fertilizers or pesticides (fungicides/herbicides) within 3 days of application, as these can stress or kill the nematodes.

What if the package got warm during shipping?

Nematodes are tougher than people think. They can survive short periods of heat during transit. If the ice pack is melted upon arrival, put them straight into the fridge. As long as they don't smell like rotting fish, they are likely still viable.

Help! I'm overwhelmed

Yeah, it's a lot the first time you're using predatory mites. Please email us at info@fgmnnursery.com and we'll be happy to help!

I don’t see anything moving in my bottle or sachet. Does that mean they’re dead?

Not at all! In fact, go ahead and deploy them.

Predatory mites are microscopic (often less than 0.5mm) and naturally blend into their carrier medium (bran or vermiculite).

  • For Bottles: The mites often huddle in the center of the bottle for insulation during transit.
  • For Sachets: These are "slow-release" nurseries. The mites stay tucked deep inside the breeding media and emerge one by one over 2–4 weeks. Seeing an "empty-looking" sachet or bottle is not proof of a loss; it is simply how they are packaged for maximum survival.

Did not work

I purchased the triple blend nematodes in hopes I can get rid of the fungus gnats that’s been hanging around our fruit trees. We applied as directed and it’s been a few weeks and I absolutely have not seen any difference. As a matter of fact, they have gotten worse. I would not recommend and would not buy this product again as they are pricey.

Hi Tracy, thanks for the honest feedback, and we're sorry the gnats are hanging on. Nematodes work best when soil moisture is managed alongside them — fungus gnat larvae thrive in consistently damp soil, so without letting the top layer dry between waterings the adults keep regenerating faster than one broad spectrum application can clear. It often takes moisture control plus a repeat treatment, or the fungus gnat specialists (Sf Nematodes). If you haven't already, please reach out to the customer service team at info@fgmnnursery.com and we'll walk through it with you.

Triple Blend Nematodes for Broad-Spectrum Soil Pest Control

I ordered the Triple Blend Nematodes for Broad-Spectrum Soil Pest Control and it came pretty quickly. After applying to my seedlings, I noticed a significant decrease of new fungus gnats (it took only a few days to see a change, definitely worth it and I am ordering another batch now!)

How many square feet will one package cover?

FGMN Nursery

Great question -- complicated answer. I'll base it on averages, but do know this can change quite a bit based on your soil, environment and pest your treating or preventing. We're more than happy to help dial it in if you provide us with more information about your situation, but in the meantime:

Treatment: 1M nematodes covers about 40-50 sq ft (so if you choose the pack of 10M, that's 400-500 sq ft)
Prevention: 1M covers about 200-250 sq ft (and again, for 10M that's 2000-2500 sq ft)

You can keep left overs in the fridge for about a month. (Recent peer reviewed reports actually state that you can keep them room temperature and it won't affect anything, but I can't personally confirm that)

What blend do you recommend for termite larva?

FGMN Nursery

Hi! Both Sc and HB nematodes will help with termite larva. They're both in the triple blend, or you could buy them individually or separately. Frankly the triple blend is your better economic bet. :)
