A first order of predatory mites usually fails for one of seven reasons, and six of them would fail again at twice the quantity, because the problem was never how many mites you put out. Ordering more is the natural response to a batch that did nothing, and it is the most expensive way to make the same mistake twice.
There are seven, ordered by how often they actually turn up rather than by how bad they are, and each one says whether it is still fixable after the fact. Several are. The first on the list is the one people most want to be fixable, and it is the one that most often is not. That is the one to settle before you reach for an insecticidal soap or a neem spray while you wait.

1. Spraying — before, during, or just to be safe
This is the big one, and it is worth being clear that it includes the gentle products. Insecticidal soap, horticultural oil and neem kill on contact, by smothering or dissolving the outside of a small soft-bodied animal. A predatory mite is a small soft-bodied animal. There is no spray that knows the difference.

The sequence goes like this, and every step in it is reasonable. You release the mites. A week later the infestation still looks bad, because it always does at a week. You reach for something mild, because mild feels like hedging rather than undoing. The spray works perfectly — on both species.
Still fixable? Partly. If you sprayed before releasing, there is a waiting period that depends on what you used, and some residues last weeks. If you sprayed after, the release is mostly gone and the honest answer is to wait out the residual period and start again.
2. The room was too cold, and more mites don't fix it
Most predatory mites have two different lower temperature limits, and the one printed on the packaging is usually the wrong one. Swirskii is the clearest case: an individual mite develops normally down to about 52 °F, but a population only grows above about 60 °F.

In between, every mite lives a normal life and leaves behind fewer than one daughter that survives to breed. The colony shrinks every generation while every animal in it is perfectly healthy. So a room at 58 °F is not slow — it is a room where the number you released is the largest number you will ever have.
Which makes the natural response, buying a bigger second lot, the most expensive version of this mistake. The second release declines at exactly the rate the first one did.
Still fixable? Yes, and it is usually the cheapest fix available. Raising the temperature does more than raising the order.
3. Buying for a pest that was never identified
Predatory mites are specific in ways their marketing is not. The two misidentifications that cost people the most are broad mite mistaken for russet mite, and thrips damage mistaken for spider mite damage — and in both cases the two answers need different animals.

Russet and rust mites are the sharpest example. They are eriophyids, a family of very small cigar-shaped plant mites, and the generalist predators most people reach for do not control them at any rate — the trials, and what to use instead.
Still fixable? Yes, but only by identifying first. A hand lens at ten times settles most of it. Bronzed or distorted new growth with no webbing points at an eriophyid, which is the case where the honest answer is that we may not have the right animal in stock.
4. Assuming they walk between plants
Swirskii will cross three feet of leaf in a day and fail to cross six inches of air, because there is nothing to walk on. On a shelf of separate pots a release lands where you put it and stays there — the plants you dosed improve and the ones you did not, do not.

Which is why an area figure off a commercial page quietly under-doses a shelf. Counting plants against counting floor is the whole of that question.
Still fixable? Yes. Dose per plant rather than per area, or push the plants together so the foliage touches for the first few weeks.
5. Releasing into a problem you can already see
Predatory mites take eggs and the youngest larvae and cannot get into anything older, which makes them a preventive tool that also works early rather than a rescue. Our working line for whitefly: more than one on a leaf you did not have to hunt for means you are past what a predator alone will fix. What that does to the numbers in week two is the part most people meet next.

Still fixable? Yes, in stages. Bring the numbers down another way first, then release predators to hold the line. That order works; the reverse one mostly does not.
6. Opening the sachet
A sachet is a breeding colony with its own food supply and a vent the mites walk out of over several weeks. Opened, it becomes a one-off release of whatever happened to be inside at that moment — which is a fraction of what it would have produced.

People open them for a completely understandable reason: to check whether there is anything alive in there. It does not answer the question. A study that counted both found no relationship between the population inside a sachet and the number actually leaving it, so mites inside tells you the colony is alive, not that predators are reaching your plants.
Still fixable? No. Hang the next one and leave it.
7. Deciding it failed on day three
Because predators eat the youngest stages, they act on the generation coming up rather than on the adults already on the plant. Those adults were always going to be there for a while, and the visible change arrives when they age out and are not replaced — usually two to four weeks.

Meanwhile you cannot find the predators, because almost nobody can. Together those two facts make a working release feel exactly like a failed one for two weeks, which is when people spray, or reorder, or both.
Still fixable? Yes: measure something on day zero. A marked leaf, a sticky card, a photograph. Then the two-week question has an answer instead of a feeling. More on that in you won't see your predatory mites.
Tips
If you are about to release for the first time
Identify the pest before you order, not after it arrives. A ten-times hand lens and five minutes. This single step prevents the most expensive version of every mistake on this list.
Read the thermometer where the plants are, at the coldest hour. A room that is 72 °F when you are in it can be 57 °F at four in the morning, and the mites are there for both.
Write down what the worst plant looks like today. One marked leaf and a count. It converts the two-week question from a feeling into a comparison.
Push the plants together for the first few weeks. Touching foliage is a road. Six inches of air is not.
Put the sprayer somewhere inconvenient. Genuinely. The week-one urge to do something is the single most destructive force in a first release.
If it did not work, diagnose before reordering. The same room, the same spray or the same misidentification produces the same result with twice the mites.
Common questions
Why didn't my predatory mites work?
Most often one of seven things: something was sprayed, the room was below the temperature at which the population can grow, the pest was never identified and is not one this species controls, the plants were too far apart for the mites to spread between them, the release went into an infestation that was already visible, a sachet was opened, or the release was judged too early. Six of those are decisions rather than a product problem.
Can I use neem or insecticidal soap with predatory mites?
Not while the mites are working. Both are contact killers and a predatory mite is a small soft-bodied arthropod — there is no spray that distinguishes the pest from the predator. If you have already sprayed, there is a waiting period before releasing that depends on the product, and some residues last weeks.
I released more the second time and it still didn't work. Why?
If the underlying cause was the room temperature, a spray residue, or the wrong species for your pest, then the second release meets exactly the same conditions as the first and ends the same way. Rate only fixes a problem that was actually about rate, which is rarer than it looks.
How far do predatory mites travel between plants?
Across touching foliage, roughly three feet a day. Between pots that do not touch, barely at all — a gap of a few inches is enough to stop most of them. Dose per plant rather than per square foot unless your canopy is genuinely continuous.
Is it too late for predatory mites if I can already see the pest?
For whitefly, our working line is more than one on a leaf you did not have to hunt for — past that, predators alone are unlikely to fix it, because most of the colony is in stages the mite cannot get into. That does not make them useless: bring the numbers down another way, then release predators to hold the line.
