Sc Nematodes

At A Glance

Steinernema carpocapsae (Sc) is the "Ambush Predator" of the nematode family. Unlike the deep-diving Hb or the cruising Sf, Sc nematodes have a unique behavior called "nictation." They stand on their tails near the soil surface and wave back and forth, waiting for a pest to brush past them. When a mobile insect touches them, they latch on and attack instantly. This makes them the absolute best choice for highly mobile pests that travel across the soil or live in the grassy thatch layer, such as fleas, caterpillars, and sod webworms.

  • Scientific Name: Steinernema carpocapsae

  • Best For: Fleas, Caterpillars (Cutworms, Armyworms, Sod Webworms), and Crane Fly Larvae.

  • Safe For: Pets, humans, and plants.

  • Key Feature: The "Stand and Wait" Ambush—they latch onto pests moving across the surface.

Target Pests

Sc nematodes are specialized for pests that move quickly or live in the upper thatch layer of lawns.

  • Primary Targets: Flea larvae and pupae (in soil/yards), Cutworms, Sod Webworms, and Armyworms.
  • Secondary Targets: Crane Fly Larvae (Leatherjackets), Peach Tree Borers, and some Weevils.
  • Wood Borers: Uniquely, Sc is often used to treat wood-boring insects by injecting the nematode solution directly into the borer holes.
  • Mechanism: They do not chase prey deep underground; they wait in the topsoil/thatch for the pest to come to them.
Environmental Needs

Because they hunt near the surface, Sc nematodes are hardy but require moisture to facilitate their "ambush" posture.

  • Temperature: They are versatile, active between 50°F - 86°F (10°C - 30°C).
  • Moisture: Essential. They need a moist thatch layer to "stand up" without drying out. If the lawn is bone dry, they cannot hunt.
  • Location: They stay in the top 1–2 inches of soil or turf thatch.

Selection Guide

Trying to decide between Sc and the other species? Here is the breakdown.

  • Choose Sc (The Ambusher): If your problem is Fleas or Caterpillars (Webworms/Cutworms). These pests move across the surface, making them perfect targets for Sc.
  • Choose Hb (The Hunter): If your problem is Grubs (Japanese Beetles). Grubs are deep underground and don't move much, so the surface-dwelling Sc won't find them effectively.
  • Choose Sf (The Patroller): If your problem is Fungus Gnats. While Sc can kill gnats, Sf is generally more aggressive against the specific larvae found in potting soil.
  • The "Flea & Tick" Strategy: For total yard protection, use a mix of Sc (for Fleas) and Hb (for Ticks/Grubs), or simply use our Triple Blend.
How to Use

Application is similar to other nematodes, but focus on the areas where pests travel.

  • Preventative Rate: Apply 1 package (e.g., 5 Million) per 250 sq. ft. every 4–6 weeks during flea/caterpillar season.
  • Curative Rate: For active flea infestations or lawn damage, double the density (e.g., 5 Million per 125 sq. ft.) and apply every 7–10 days for 3 rounds.
  • Prep: Mow the lawn to expose the thatch layer. Water lightly before application.
  • Mix: Dissolve the carrier into water and stir vigorously.
  • Apply: Use a hose-end sprayer (filter removed) or watering can. Focus on shaded areas, under porches, and dog runs where fleas congregate.
  • Post-Care: Water immediately after to wash them off the grass blades and into the thatch. Keep moist for at least 3 days.
How They're Shipped

Packaging: Shipped in a dormant state in a carrier powder or gel.

Viability: They look like a dusty paste or powder. They wake up when mixed with water.

Storage: Refrigerate immediately. Store at 38-42°F for up to 4 weeks. Do not freeze.

FAQ

What is your Live Delivery Guarantee?

We guarantee that your beneficial insects will arrive healthy and ready to work. Because we are shipping live organisms, we use packaging and expedited shipping to ensure their safety. In the rare event that your order is compromised during transit, please take a photo of the package and contact us within 24 hours of delivery so we can make it right.

Will this kill adult fleas on my dog?

No. Nematodes live in the soil, not on your pet. They kill the flea larvae and pupae in the ground, stopping the next generation from jumping onto your dog. You still need to treat the dog for adults, but the nematodes break the life cycle in the yard.

Can I use them on indoor carpet?

We generally advise against it. While they can kill fleas in carpet, you must keep the carpet damp for 3+ days for them to work, which creates a high risk of mold and mildew. We recommend using nematodes outdoors to stop fleas from entering, and using dry methods (vacuuming/steaming) indoors.

How do they kill caterpillars?

When a cutworm or armyworm crawls over the soil surface at night, the Sc nematodes latch onto its belly, enter the body, and release bacteria that kills the caterpillar within 48 hours.

Can I inject them into trees?

Yes! For borers (like Iris Borers or Peach Tree Borers), you can use a syringe to squirt a concentrated nematode solution directly into the borer holes. Plug the hole with clay or wax afterwards to keep moisture in.

Are they safe for my cat/dog to walk on?

Yes, immediately. Sc nematodes are completely harmless to mammals. Your pets can play in the yard right after you water them in.

Do they work on Ticks?

Sc has some effect on ticks, but Steinernema feltiae (Sf) or a Triple Blend is generally considered slightly better for tick control. However, Sc is the undisputed king of Flea control.

Help! I'm overwhelmed

Yeah, it's a lot the first time you're using predatory mites. Please email us at info@fgmnnursery.com and we'll be happy to help!

I don’t see anything moving in my bottle or sachet. Does that mean they’re dead?

Not at all! In fact, go ahead and deploy them.

Predatory mites are microscopic (often less than 0.5mm) and naturally blend into their carrier medium (bran or vermiculite).

  • For Bottles: The mites often huddle in the center of the bottle for insulation during transit.
  • For Sachets: These are "slow-release" nurseries. The mites stay tucked deep inside the breeding media and emerge one by one over 2–4 weeks. Seeing an "empty-looking" sachet or bottle is not proof of a loss; it is simply how they are packaged for maximum survival.
